MOVIES OF TRIPS TO EUROPE

1995 With Wietske in Harlingen (first little bit in Goenga: to download it to your computer may take some time if you have a slow internet connection, as I have. However I discovered you can stream it using the “open the network stream” option in the VLC media player’s “Media” menu. Copy the link and paste it in there. You may have to download the VLC player if you don’t already have it. This applies to all video clips).

Portuguese Fado Music

Latin American (Added April 2025)

An acquired taste, but once acquired very addictive.  https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=vamvakaris+markos

Some time ago I discovered Portuguese fado music. Here is my transcription of and link to Mariza's version of
"O Gente de Minha Terra" (midi file); MP3 file with me attempting to play 4 overlayed tracks!

Valsa de Euridice as sung by Mariana de Moraes. Here is a PowerPoint presentation of my transcript for guitar with lyrics in French and Portuguese.
Valsa de Euridice (an instrumental version slowly cobbled together by me). Here is the transcript.

Books

Henry Miller wrote a book: "The Books in my Life". This seems to have turned out to be too ambitious a project for me, easier said than done....
However, since about 2013 I've become a fan of the great contemporary Australian writer Alexis Wright. (see page 108 “CONNECTIONS” in Notes to Knillis).

Also I have translated some of the European-Dutch writer Cees Nooteboom's work and had that printed on-line for friends. Below are 3 links to the results of the work that I have done in cooperation with the late Syd Harrex of the English Department at The Flinders University of South Australia. That was interesting and great fun, helped by the odd glass of red wine or two.

And here are some of my more recent THOUGHTS. Depending on inspiration they will be added to. Recently (Feb 2024) I have made a BLURB book of these thoughts. Here is the PDF of this book.
More recently further bits and pieces may begin to appear here: Losse Flodders; Education or Indoctrination:
(Feb. 2025)

It has also been fun lately to revisit the remnants of my Latin education with a friend who at one stage in his life used to teach that language and who expressed a similar interest in digging up some of his slumbering knowledge. We found some anonymous poetry by or reminiscent of Catullus and thus a bit too saucy, perhaps, for adolescent high school kids. Cras amet qui numquam amavit quique amavit cras amet

That Sweet Something Dear
(Spikes Seven Pods of Pepper)

Midi files of the above

This band operated in Adelaide (South Australia) from the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties. Its leader, arranger, musical director and pianist was John Silha. The band was very seldom heard in public, but rehearsals were frequent and good fun. The DCJO was styled on the music of early King Oliver and Turk Murphy.

Fortunately we recorded almost all of the tunes we played at the rehearsals, and I have put these on a couple of CDs. Please contact me if you would like a copy. Recording and musical quality is variable, but every take contains something of interest for people who know the Classic Jazz genre.

I have also made printable copies of most of John's excellent arrangements and the "solos" on the CDs, as well as midi files. These files include an arrangement of "That Sweet Something Dear", a tune King Oliver recorded, but which has never been found. I attempted to arrange this tune some years ago now using the Musiktime Deluxe notation software. This is the midi file, converted for Apple/Mac users to " MP3". You can now get an app in the apple store that will open midi-files and play them (the slide-whistle does not work, pity. I thought I did a pretty good job! It would be great if someone could use it as a basis for something that sounds more realistic! You'll need music notation software like ‘Sibelius’ that converts midi into sheet music to print out the scores, otherwise just send me an email.

On the left is a link to our 2 CDs. The original version(s) on which the tunes were based are now fairly easily available on you-tube, in case you feel inclined to compare! Of course we don't come anywhere near them, but it was fun trying...

I used the Kid Ory version of “That Sweet Something Dear”. These days you can find most of these things by fishing the internet (YouTube et.al.). Good Luck!

Building Classical Guitars, a Portuguese Guitar, a Baglama, Tsouras and Bouzouki (and trying to play them).

I have so far built three new guitars and restored an old lute and a cheapish clapped-out instrument I found in a tropical coffee shop at the Malanda Falls on a trip to the deep North. Very satisfying! Lately I have built a Portuguese Guitar and fixed an Arab Lute! Playing them well is much harder.....But I managed to cut and paste the following tunes: new!(22/09/24)

Culture Training Manual for Medical Workers in Aboriginal Communities

Bio-Psycho-Social Model for the Development of (Mental) Health and Illness

For those who are still not convinced that the answer is 42...
In a former life I used to be a psychologist (mostly Clinical). A lot of things didn't add up and at some stage (I must have been particularly pissed off - sorry, disillusioned - which became increasingly easy) I decided to find some sense in it all. I still think I was on to something though! Whatever happened to those diagnosed as "Worried Well"?

A Christmas Star

These are the instructions. I re-learned how to make this star from my late mum in Dec.1997. A bit of a challenge, but very worthwhile having a go at.
